Ensuring peak availability and security with BVQ° monitoring & analysis
Hager: A Global Leader in Electrical Installation Solutions
Hager is a leading provider of solutions and services for electrical installations in residential, industrial and commercial buildings, headquartered in Blieskastel, Germany. The Hager Group is a global market leader in electrical installation solutions. Its portfolio ranges from energy distribution and cable management to safety technology and intelligent building control. Innovation, safety, reliability, ease of installation and operation and appealing design are the key principles that define the offerings of the Hager, Berker and Elcom brands - and the expectations their solutions and services are built to meet. Electricians, planners, architects, wholesalers and end customers alike can rely on this commitment.
Background
To operate its global SAP infrastructure, Hager relies on a high-availability solution based on IBM SAN Volume Controller (SVC), spanning two sites located 40 kilometers apart. These sites are connected via a leased dark fiber link. While this setup offers many advantages, it also presents technological challenges - particularly in monitoring and alerting. The centrally managed SAP system, used worldwide, must meet the highest availability requirements. The SVC stretched cluster fulfills this by enabling fast, fully automated failover across the 40-kilometer distance.
A particular challenge is the dark fiber connection between the sites, which cannot be directly monitored using in-house tools. Since all data transfers use this link multiple times, it is essential to continuously monitor performance metrics to proactively respond to any degradation.
SVA Solution: Business Volume Qualicision (BVQ°)
Hager chose the SVA solution Business Volume Qualicision (BVQ°) because it had already proven effective in identifying and resolving issues in a previous system. BVQ° excels in performance and load monitoring, analysis and visualization. After a short installation period, BVQ° began collecting all topological, load and performance data from the SVC and connected storage systems. To present this data clearly and meaningfully, indicators are continuously calculated to enable rapid assessment of system health.
The combination of BVQ°’s various analysis tools allows for detailed insights at all levels of the SVC, including current and historical performance and load data. Thanks to the compact display of capacity and performance metrics on a single screen, issues can be quickly identified and resolved. Optimization potential within the storage environment is also easily visible, enabling timely action.
BVQ° impresses with its intuitive GUI, clearly displaying configuration details and performance-critical metrics. Its strength lies in providing quick, comprehensive insights into the entire storage architecture. Detailed topological, load and performance-critical data from the SVC, connected storage systems and VMware integration can be visualized and analyzed.
Optimized Utilization and Future Planning
Hager now benefits from optimized utilization of its existing IT infrastructure. The intuitive, task-oriented GUI significantly reduces administrative effort. BVQ° also enhances planning reliability by displaying not only current but also historical performance and capacity data. This makes future decisions - such as new storage purchases - much easier and more informed.
